Gemstones
A gemstone can be any rock, mineral or petrified material which can be cut, polished and used in the creation of jewelry. Gemstones come in many colors, shapes, and sizes. Most are minerals, but some are organic materials (amber, coral, pearl), and some are man-made crystals (synthetic diamond, synthetic ruby). There are hundreds of gemstones, they cover the alphabet from Afghanite through Zoisite!
Gemstones are traditionally divided into two types: Precious Stones (diamond, ruby, sapphire, emerald) and Semi-Precious Stones (everything else). However, the classification is no longer valid and the US Federal Trade Commission is considering banning the terms because the classification do not represent the true value of a gemstone.
For example, amethyst was considered a precious gem until a large deposit was found in South America at which point, the gem lost its precious status because it was no longer rare. Similarly, opal and jade are categorized as Semi-Precious; however, some opal and jade pieces are worth more than their counterparts in the Precious category.
